Inter-rituality as a New Framework of Analysis

In this essay, Associate Professor Jens Kreinath (Wichita State University) presents a new approach to the study of interritual encounters in Turkey and the Middle East. The essay is an abridged version of a presentation professor Kreinath held at The Faculty of Theology at The University of Oslo on June 5th during a seminar organized by the Reassembling Democracy (REDO) research project.

 

Inter-rituality as a Framework of Analysis: A New Approach to the Study of Interreligious Encounters and the Economies of Ritual Exchange

Interreligious Studies, so far, lacks a major component of research: namely, an explicit focus on the study of ritual. Based on my considerations and examples, I argue that rituals are a major means of shaping and reshaping interreligious relationships. My objective is to introduce inter-rituality as a new approach to the field of Interreligious Studies. This attempt is substantiated by recent research on the sharing of sacred sites and the participation of different religious communities in the celebration of festivals or the performance of rituals
